Matty is three years old when World War Two begins. Her parents, Jack and Lily, together Lily’s sister, Rose and her husband and daughter, flee the constant bombing for a safe billet in the country. This works well until it all falls apart and Lily is left alone with her two small children. While other young women are getting the most excitement out of the war Lily is now marooned in a boring country billet with a family she does not like. Her solution to the tedium of being stranded in an unfriendly environment? A private Dickensian boarding school for Matty and Jimmy, and the bright lights of London for Lily, with the added excitement of an affair with an American serviceman. By the time she turns seven, the resourceful Matty has other ideas. With the help of an older boy, she and Jimmy escape back to London try to track down the mother they have not seen for so long they have just about forgotten what she looks like. Matty and Jimmy’s journey across a scarred London is packed with danger and excitement, especially for the young Jimmy, as he collects shrapnel from bomb sites with other kids. For Matty there is now the experience of a heady freedom from bullying teachers and the torment of being locked in the shoe cupboard. Her job is find her parents and to get herself and her brother back to some semblance of family life after more than two years in a cruel institution.
