Über den Autor
Kate Just is an American-born Australian artist best known for elaborate knitted sculptures and mixed media installations including figurative and abstract representations of the body and skin, large text-works, tools, armours and knitted banners. Her central interest is the questioning and reframing of historic or iconographic representations of gender from an autobiographical, subjective or embodied perspective. Just's works often image moments of personal transition or struggle, yield an image of intimacy with self or other, or project the idea of hope in the future. Recently, Just has undertaken a range of community-engaged knitting and photographic projects in Austria, the UK and Melbourne addressing diverse issues including women's representation in art, violence against women and the federal stance on refugees. In both her solo and group works, Just challenges stereotypes of knitting as a domestic craft, recasting it as a potent sculptural and conceptual medium.
