For over a hundred years, the Murray Smoke Stacks stood in the center of Salt Lake Valley and were a landmark for all. Their smoke was the Valley's weather vane as well as a visual barometer of the business climate. No smoke meant men were not working, and so no pay checks. Smoke pouring forth meant just the opposite, that all was well with the man and their families.



The stacks symbolized the smelter, which was one of the two roots from whence Murray City was born; the other, closley abutting the smelter, were miles upon miles of lush farms and busy dairies.



This is a classic tale of when industry and agriculture collide and then combine. It is a story of "Two Cities" and how they joined to become our City of Murray, Utah.
