Über das Buch
I will introduce you to the beautiful, proud, dignified local Maya who persevere despite the fact that the majority of the people in the Department of Solola live in extreme poverty and have endured countless hardships. I wish to show the dichotomy of life for the locals. Although the region is abundantly rich in biodiversity, landscape and culture, this region is the poorest in Guatemala.
It is poverty in paradise.
In May, 2010 Tropical Storm Agatha swept across Guatemala, leaving a trail of destruction to a landscape still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Stan 4 years ago. Many Lake Atitlan communities were hit badly, losing homes, schools and in some cases lives. Of the six Santa Cruz communities around the lake and in the mountains above, El Jaibalito fared the worst. 14 families lost everything and many more homes and public buildings were severely damaged. The rainy season is just beginning in Guatemala and more damage and destruction is anticipated.
