Über das Buch
The photography showcase, "Eyes of Self: Every Young Eastern Soul Offers a Frame" portrays the life of Southeast Asia through the faces of the children. Loyola College senior and amateur photographer, Mike Tirone, traveled to Thailand his junior year to study abroad for six months and while overseas, compiled a photography portfolio of nearly 9,000 photographs. Of those images, Tirone narrowed down his portfolio to nearly 50 images that represent four particular segments; poverty and injustice, spirituality based around Buddhism, happiness and serenity, and finally cross-cultural effects of Western society. Tirone centered his attention on the faces and eyes of the children he captured, as they are the most purely genuine aspects of Asian culture. The children show qualities which counter their modernizing cultures of Southeast Asia through their big, bold eyes. The smiles on their face show the absolute blithe towards their deeply rooted culture being changed and their overall maturity within one of the worst poverty-stricken regions of the world.
