“The picture in a photo book, to me is like a sentence in a text book. If you extract it from its context, it might adopt a totally different meaning. Others might use words, I mostly use color, composition and contraposition to contemplate on a certain topic. This allows me to reduce an issue to its real essence and meaning, illustrating it in a subtle and poetic way. The vitality which emerges from the plain constellation of subjects, objects and colors is of great importance to this process. In my eyes this can only be found in unstaged photography. Somehow one can sense that there is no authenticity in an artificially staged constellation. The picture then might look vaguely off. Therefor I strongly believe in a documentary approach on important aspects. Nowadays making pictures has been democratized. Anyone can shoot a technically good picture with almost no effort. In my view it is not only what is depicted, but also the way and mindset it was taken in. One might understand the basilar content of a picture straight away, but it is that vitality, which lets you feel and understand the deeper meaning encapsulated in the picture frame. Like in a novel, the meaning is hidden between the lines. I am fascinated by peoples behaviour, affectations and the traces they leave behind. Once people occupy spaces, they tend to crowd it with various things, some more useful then others. Things keep people occupied and serve as different kind of status symbols. Hence people assign a certain value to their belongings, these same things start blocking their view of the space which surrounds them. At the same time objects can tell a lot about the character of their owners. This book illustrates my observations of these interrelations.”
