Über das Buch
The SUR:biennial, a multi-venue exhibition focusing on artists influenced and/or impacted by cultures from south of the US-border, aims to expand Los Angeles’ importance as a critical epicenter in today’s decentralized art scene. Three venues in Whittier and Cerritos were chosen to host the exhibit, as these are predominantly Latino communities on the east side of Los Angeles that are often overshadowed by art venues farther west.
The theme of this year's SUR:biennial is "Assimilation, Adaptation, and Acculturation" and presents a program that incorporates a number of unique viewpoints on the subject, spread throughout the exhibit, which demand a shift in viewers’ perceptions of identity and cultural belonging(s). The artworks range from video installation, large-scale sculpture, site-specific installations, social interventions, documented performance art and a photomural.
Artists: Luciana Abait, Raul Baltazar, Castillo, Karla Diaz, Martin Durazo, Gustavo Godoy, Vidal Herrera, Ichiro Irie, Lizz Lopez, Elana Mann, MobileMuralLab, Marcus Kuiland-Nazario, and Vincent Ramos.
Essayists: Sharon Mizota and Shana Nys Dambrot
