Shirley (Lawrence) Steele spent most of her adult life in Grinnell, Iowa, but grew up in rural Missouri. Volume 1 of her poetry is the biographical poem of her life, meant as a stand-alone work. It covers her birth up until the death of her father and brother in 1940. She meant this to be an account of the lives of her and her family, for their descendents.
