Über das Buch
From the inception, the title of the book was the organizing theme. The title is an inversion of Gertude Stein’s (1874-1946) famous quote about her search for her childhood home in Oakland, CA, which no longer existed at the time of her quest. Upon this discovery, she ponders the significance of tracing her childhood and resolves the situation with… why bother, “There is no there there.” This book's title, “Niles is Here, not there” inverts the cultural loss of demolition with factual declaration that Niles has survived, is a place, is culturally significant, and is definitely, not there in suburban Fremont.
