Über das Buch
I’ve been involved with the WWII Memorial for six years. I began documenting Ray Kaskey’s brilliant bronze sculpture and ended up photographing the construction and doing a set of architectural photographs which became a book entitled “WWII Memorial: Jewel of the Mall.” Senator Robert Dole (who is in large part responsible for the creation of the Memorial) wrote the forward to the book and I think we both thought we were “done.” Far from it, for the past eighteen months, he’s been greeting and I’ve been photographing Veterans groups visiting the Memorial. Funded by the people, “we built it…and they have come”...in droves. Veterans groups, citizens’ associations, families, girl scouts, schoolchildren, Masons, cultural groups, art critics, tourists from all over the world visit and watch as Americans bring their WWII veterans, their seniors to visit this long overdue Memorial to their service. I’ve been photographing this sometimes final voyage these generations make. It’s moving and it’s wonderful…Thanks to all of you volunteers who make this possible.
