Über das Buch
Over the last decades, I have spent extended periods of time searching for endangered species, both plants and people, and photographing them in color. It has become a richly rewarding vocation—remarkable flowers, faces and landscapes live through my photographs in a sacred, timeless realm. Through these efforts I realise that life is a pilgrimage in pursuit of sacred precincts. The search requires climbing mountains—some physical, some intellectual, and others spiritual. My photography is an attempt to communicate with my subjects. To capture some of the energy, the spirit, of those privileged moments. Recently, while listening to Count Basie’s classic 1955 recording of April in Paris I savored my souvenirs of a Parisian April. The images echo my perspective: light, shapes, shadows, reflections. Having published a number of books, I realise now how the layout can influence the meaning of the images. Also, images need to breathe, they require white space. Following Count Basie’s instructions to his band—”Lets try it ... One more once” —I selected a group of images to offer them the opportunity to live and communicate afresh. The selection starts in the Jardin du Luxembourg, Paris, and contains images from Paris, Toronto, Gros Morne, China, and India. The criterion for inclusion was that the image moved me.
