Stage One
Sketches and Stories
Ride into the Mirror is a visual journey, written in two parts, of a solo bike ride of 16.000 kilometres through Asia and North America in 2012.
Part one covers the Asian leg of the trip, part two the Northern American stages.
This long journey had a high standard as the sketches and stories in this book will show, but it was also plagued by frequent breakdowns and consequently the adjustments of the itinerary. Just outside Bangkok, Thailand, Geert’s old and trusted Stumpjumper bike started wobbling and with tears in his eyes, he discovered that its frame had cracked. After returning to Bangkok he had only one option and that was to buy a new bike. He continued his journey on his new Trekky through the remaining part of the Asia stretch and after resting in the Netherlands, he continued riding from Boston to Los Angeles in the United States.

Über den Autor
In Australia, Geert discovered a love for nature and for unspoiled wilderness. Long distance hiking is a passion, and he hiked in many places. He has a need to document his travels by word and image, and started writing and sketching on all of his journeys. In 1997 Geert was involved in a hiking accident that changed the lives of his hiking partner Warren Macdonald and that of himself, when high on the slopes of Mount Bowen on Hinchinbrook Island, a boulder broke off a mountain and fell on Warrens legs. They survived a horrific night and 46 hours later Warren was rescued. This experience was later documented and released as: "I Shouldn't Be Alive, Trapped Under A Boulder". He is an avid bikepacker, and rode the ‘Western Wildlands Route’ in 2019. He was the first ever rider to finish this journey going northbound. Geert recently hiked the Bibbulmun Track from the Perth Hills to Albany in Western Australia, and completed the European Divide Trail Bikepacking route in October 2023
