Über das Buch
It's been over 35 years since I left my Nikkormat behind and concentrated on video to make my art and my living. In 2015 I bought my first digital camera. These are the first serious photographs I've made since then. I would hope that my eyes, ideas, and my visual vocabulary have matured since then. I had forgotten how much satisfaction I got from photography ... how much I missed it.
I started by simply walking down to the end of my block and photographing an area in Rochester that has become known as The Inner Loop Project. A highway that is being filled in to attempt to connect a languishing downtown to it's surrounding neighborhoods. My project expanded pretty quickly energizing me to photograph people who lived on or near my block. Then I moved closer to include family, friends, and nature.
The idea of a "Human Landscape" was what came to mind. I tossed around the idea of "Legacy." It was a word that intrigued me. The title for the section "The Four Soils" came from a Biblical reference I had heard while watching a movie on Netflix. It seemed to apply to what I was photographing in the Inner Loop. All in all it was a mixed bag of interests that began to emerge and come together.
Everything I was photographing was accessible. It was the simple yet crucial idea of "access" that my fellow photographers W. Kieth McManus and Bob Doyle made me aware of.
And so, these are the results of almost two years of work embarking on my "second" journey with still photography.
