Nestled in the fertile fields of Medina Valley and cradled within an oxbow of the emerald-green Medina River, the historic village of Castroville features a unique architectural heritage that can only be found in the state of Texas.

Far from a suburb, or a contemporary planned community as you can get, Castroville features limestone houses (or “huses" in Alsatian) that were built by Alsatian settlers but with out the flourish of Alsace proper. And, for this fact they functioned well in the climate drawing the attention of noted Texas architects David Williams, O’ Neil Ford, and others for being a major part of the Texas Hill Country vernacular.

This book features historic photographs of Castroville from the archives of David Williams, the archives of the Library of Congress, and photographs from the past 15 years by Castroville resident Robert Ziebell.

Robert Ziebell is a lens-based artist and is dedicated to bridging still and motion imagery together to create a new visual language.Working in media from an artist’s perspective for over 30 years, he was featured in various arts publications including Grand Street, Adbuster’s, Texas Monthly, Dwell, The Texas Observer, and Tribeza magazine in Austin, TX He has also been included in Edward James y Las Pozas a book published by Turner Publishing in Spain, and Texas Mythes & Realities and Learning by Doing: 25 years of the Core Program both published by the MFA/H. Ziebell’s film, video and photography has been shown and supported by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, The Austin Contemporary,The Film Center at the Art Institute in Chicago, Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, OR, the Wexner Center in Columbus, OH, the The Andy Warhol Foundation, Austin Film Society, & the Ann Arbor, and Florence (Italy) Film Festivals.
