Foreword
Each year now, thousands of Australians make a pilgrimage to Gallipoli, to stand on the shore at North Beach, watch the dawn rise over the Sphinx, and remember the landing at ANZAC Cove on April 25,1915.
And, each year, a small group of Australians set out earlier to learn more about the ill-fated campaign in which 8,709 of our countrymen died.
From all walks of life, from all over the nation, they join an Australian War Memorial battlefield tour, led by Senior Historian Ashley Ekins and other Australian and Turkish expert guides who hold the keys to understanding the Dardanelles and the mystique of Gallipoli.
In 2007, John Lafferty joined the group with his cameras to record a unique journey.
Strangers in a strange country when they met, these Australians finished their journey as friends, having established a lasting bond with each other.
This remarkable and hauntingly beautiful book records their pilgrimage.
